We investigated a cluster of shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli ( STEC) O104:H4 infections after a family party during a large E. coli O104 is a Shiga toxin–producing E. coli (STEC). The toxins cause illness and the associated symptoms by sticking to the intestinal cells and aggravating the cells along the intestinal wall. This, in turn, can cause bloody stools to occur. Escherichia coli O104:H4 is an infrequently isolated pathogenic E. coli serotype and the cause of the 2011 European diarrheal outbreak (Mellmann et al., 2011). STEC O104:H4 was isolated at state public health laboratories or at CDC from Shiga toxin–positive stool enrichment broths submitted by clinical laboratories.

There is an outbreak of Escherichia coli O104:H4 infection in France, south of Bordeaux, where 8 cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and 8 cases of bloody diarrhoea have been reported.
